So now that a few other people have given campaign settings, I figure it's not a bad idea to share something I've been working on a little bit outside of Blackout. The name is a bit of a placeholder, but it's, well, there.
Anyways, the plot is a bit recycled and cliche and it kind of hinges heavily on my love of Bancho Digimon, but hopefully the groundwork should be solid enough.
PRE-CAMPAIGN NOTES
Mechanical
- Characters will start off using the Child Template.
- Digivices have limited function, they have the basic "plot device granted by GM" power, as well as a Digimon Scanner, short-range tracker, and short-range communications (visual and audio connections via a projected holo-screen).
- Digimon will start at the In-Training Stage and will advance in Stages at specific plot points.
- Characters are allowed a small collection of common household items, the sort of things they'd simply have on them while out and about.
- The Digimon's Mega Stage should include a Bancho or something akin to it, Digimon such as Beelzebumon or Samudramon would be acceptable substitutes, as would custom Bancho Megas (ie; BanchoGarurumon, BanchoPandamon, etc).
- Characters will have received their Digivice within a few weeks of the Campaign starting (see world information before).
- Characters should know or possibly be related to a local, friendly police officer (name can vary depending on where you set up the world). This is mostly to make the first scene less... awkward.
- Characters must have the standard number of Torments given in the book. Additional Torments are fine, but will grant no mechanical bonuses.
- Characters will advance in regress in age over the course of this campaign. When an Age Bump happens, they will be granted the difference between their old Starting CP and the new Starting CP as free 1-for-1 CP to spend when that point occurs. For example jumping from Child to Teenager would grant them X CP, where X is the Teenager CP-the Child TP.
- Evolution progresses as normal, however a Digimon may simply have a Armor or Hybrid stage in their lines, but they gain no bonuses for using this type of Stage, it's just for flavor. For example, Veemon could have Flamedramon and BurningGreymon on it's line, but they'd just be Champion and Ultimate Stages instead of having Armor and Hybrid bonuses.
World Information
- Digimon information to the common populous is that they're simply a fictional franchise, akin to the Tamers universe. The primary product is the virtual pets, but fighting games, trading cards, and TV series all exist and thrive in this universe. There are even tournaments where people battle their hard-trained pets to compete for various prizes (these tournaments exist for other formats, but the pet simulator is the most popular format). The reason characters should receive their Digivice toys shortly before the campaign is that simply, if you gave more time it would make very little sense as to WHY they're still at the In-Training Stage (getting to Rookie or Champion does not take a massive amount of time investment).
- The world itself is somewhat modern, not massively more or less advanced than the world is in real life.
- There have been rumors of people creating real Digimon, or hacking their game to make Digimon appear out of them, known as "Realizing", but it's considered to be nothing more than an urban legend, as no concrete evidence has been found of such things happening.
Digital World Information
- Time in the Digital World moves at a massively faster pace than the real world, to the point that decades in the Digital World would be less than one second in the Real World.
- The Digital World is currently under rule by Regulumon, who resides in the capital, Chromium City, Folder Continent. He rules the realms he controls with an iron fist and considers himself just no matter the circumstance, although there are still plenty of wild or uncontrolled areas. Approximately 50% of the Digital World is under Regulumon's control. There are several small factions who directly oppose control for various reasons, however none of them are considered a real threat.
- The Digital World works off of a Primary Village, similar to Adventure (this is not the same Digital World as Adventure however, it does use the same map for simplicity's sake). After being defeated, a Digimon will revert to a Digitama and it's data will be sent to Primary Village to start over at the beginning. Humans however, will have no such luck. Primary Village is currently under Regulumon's protection. Excess data from a defeated Digimon is returned to the world, either being absorbed by the victor to make them stronger, or affecting the environment in some minor way.
- There's a rumor of Digimon vanishing in pillars of light, however nothing has been confirmed about it, so Digimon who claim such things are treated like people who make outrageous claims about people being abducted by aliens in the real world; generally, stark raving lunatics.
- Regulumon controls an army of Commandramon-line Digimon, led by an elite force of Darkdramon. Their numbers are unknown, and the source of their production is unconfirmed, there are several rumors about it, however.
- Regulumon allegedly controls a portal to the Human World, these are however, just rumors.
- Obviously communications to the outside world not wired through a Digivice, is impossible.
- Digimon might age, but it's not noticeable even after immense spans of time, to the point that they're essentially immortal when it comes to aging. "Old Programs can still run" is a joking phrase that some ancient Digimon have taken up saying. These Digimon are often millions of years old in the Digital Realm, and are still quite capable of holding their own in combat, their bodies have not fallen apart in the slightest. In fact, the older the Digimon, the more threat they can be in combat, as they have ages of experience on their side, even if newer Digimon may have a bit more raw power behind them.
- Some say that Regulumon made a deal with the gods, and can control whether or not a Digimon resurrects at Primary Village, or is simply destroyed entirely. This is however, just a rumor. (Spoiler, it's true).
Other Information
- Conflicting viewpoints are obviously something that would create more tension within the campaign. Everyone always agreeing to do the same thing over and over, gets dull. Drama creates a good story, so long as you take care to keep it in character.
SESSION 1
- The characters are all gathered, for one reason or another, at a local park. Now obviously their parents said to get home before sunset. They're kids! Maybe they know each other from school or the like, but they all somehow gathered at the playground.
- The previously-named-but-not-named cop comes over and speaks to the children, asking if they'd seen any suspicious behavior or strange things, before heading off as, well, obviously they don't know anything, telling the kids to get home safely. He leaves, giving the group time to discuss the question and time to start packing up to go home. He's not in uniform right now, but despite being off-duty, something is bothering him enough to still be investigating.
- However, just as the group is about to leave, the sky darkens and a flash of light is seen. The officer is seen running back to the park, noticing the children still gathered and skids to a halt, ready to make a 90 degree turn and lead... whatever he's running from, away from the children. However, an unearthly roar is heard in the nearby forest as a dark shadow soars overhead, a cloaked figure walking out of the woods.
- The cloaked figure taunts the officer, before the massive shadow lands next to him. In the strange light it's obscured however (Note: the figure is a formerly incarcerated prisoner sent to jail by the officer's squad. He has a bone to pick, and called in a few favors and made his Digimon, Darkdramon, Realize, and is now after revenge. Guess it was more than just a rumor huh?).
- The officer places himself between the figure and the party, to protect them if he can, glancing back and urging the kids to run. However, before he can, a blast of energy is fired, obscuring everyone's field of vision.
- The party opens their eyes to a dark, flat landscape, a bright green grid showing the texture of it. The roar is heard behind the party again as a collection of voices urge them to run, a group of lights guiding their way forward. As they run forward, they hear something, or to be specific, a LOT of somethings chasing them. With every second, the party feels them getting closer, until the voices instruct them to jump. As they jump (if they don't, just have the following happen anyways), a jagged hole opens up beneath them, dropping them downward onto a verdant island (File Island). They land without harm, but may be a bit dazed. If any of them looked back at the hole, they may see a few figures following them in (Commandramon, Sealsdramon, Tankdramon).
- The party is suddenly surrounded by... their partner Digimon! Considering these Digimon have known them through their Digivices for what's essentially ages for them, they're excited to finally meet in person.
- The sort-of-reunion is cut short however, as crashing is heard in the bushes nearby. Some Commandramon have found them! This is a good chance for some simple combat, the party should win without evolving.
- However, the squad leader, Sealsdramon, also finds them shortly after. Use this as an opportunity to let the party hit the Rookie Stage.
That is unfortunately as far as I've planned out for the session. I have other ideas for plot points of the series, but in essence it revolves around overthrowing Regulumon's tyrannical rule, restoring balance to the Digital World, and getting back home and stopping the blast from hitting the officer, as they have time to do that now! After that, it will end up turning into a roundup of criminals making their Digimon Realize, and possibly even a power struggle between party members.
Why is it called inheritance then?
Well, when the party reaches Chromium City, the plan is for them to come across BanchoLeomon and his gang of the other 4 canon Bancho Digimon of those opposed to Regulumon's rule (fun fact: Regulumon is, within this canon, BanchoLeomon's sibling, having been born from the same Digitama). Swap up the Digimon currently there based on party composition, obviously. Even if all the Party Members chose alternate/homebrew Megas, one of the party should have presumably been wiped out. BanchoLeomon should be the last to get the chopping block, however, even if a Party Member shares the Mega, due to the storytelling purposes of his presence.
Now it keeps going, don't worry. Eventually a plot point occurs where the party is fleeing Chromium with the Bancho Digimon, the latter being dropped like flies until only BanchoLeomon is left. Turning around and sacrificing himself, akin to the officer before, sacrifices himself so the party can flee. Instead of disappearing, however, his and the other Bancho Digimon's Data is absorbed into the party's Digivices, allowing them to hit their Mega Stages, 'inheriting' the will of the Bancho Digimon. Obviously, they'll probably want to regroup and plan things out over rushing back in to fight Regulumon and his army!
Phew, that was a bit of a mouthful, glad I have like, an hour before class starts. Enjoy!
