Just trying my hand at some setting building here. This is fairly bare-bones, but I might add to it as ideas come to me. Please forgive the quality (or lack thereof) of my writing.
History: The Digital World first came into being in the 1990s, growing from computers and communication networks, but remained unknown to humankind until 1998, when eight children were drawn through a mysterious portal. These first few underwent numerous trials and adventures in their attempts to get home, but were aided by native Digimon that formed powerful bonds with them.
When they finally returned to the human world, their story was widely broadcast around the world, dominating the news for months. Eventually, scientists discovered methods of opening gates to the digital world at will. After years of study, a private company opened a experimental theme park known as Digiworld, working in conjunction with powerful benevolent digimon that wished to promote good relations between worlds. Eventually Digiworld locations opened in Tokyo, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Paris, California, and Florida. These parks allowed visitors to enter the digital world, and witness the variety of exotic landscapes and digimon firsthand.
The Digiworld parks were a resounding success, but in time unrelated events caused world events to take a turn for the worst. National tensions heightened and wars began to break out across the world, culminating in nuclear exchange. Those humans that were in the digital world at the time of the nuclear onslaught were spared the destruction, but found that gates home could no longer be opened. Surviving scientists feared that the annihilation of the human world's communications systems would result in the destruction of the digital world as well, but eventually concluded that their new home had at some point become self-sustaining.
That was thirty years ago.
Now: Between tourists, park technicians, scientific crews and explorers, some 150'000 people were trapped in the digital world, and that number has increased since as the survivors eventually had children. The humans live in cities analogous to the Digiworld theme park they entered through, as well as smaller villages formed around former research bases. Digimon are a common, and vital, part of life in the cities, but even now relatively few people have made bonds like like the Original Eight, but it does happen now and then. A new phenomenon has begun to occur in recent years, with rare individuals being able to take on digimon forms themselves. This is very rare, and all known instances are individuals that were born in the Digital World.
Miscellaneous Notes:
1: Player character can have either companion Digimon (As in Adventure and Tamers) or have hybrid forms (as in Frontier), their choice. However, Hybrids start as rookie-equivalents rather than Champion-Equivalents.
2: The digivice of this setting is called the D-Comm. It has a card-reader, as well as most of the capabilities of a modern smart-phone. Every human possesses a D-Comm, but it remains a flat grey color and only has basic feature for most people. Those who either bond with a companion or develop a hybrid form "awaken" their D-Comms, which become more personalized in both appearance and function.
3: I don't have an idea for an overall singular threat yet, but hostile "wild" digimon are a problem. The Royal Knights exist, but are occupied with keeping the Dark Area quarantined from the rest of the Digital World. Some threats will doubtlessly arise from the Dark Area, but I don't have a specific plan yet. Open to suggestions though.
4: The "Original Eight" aren't the main characters from Adventure 01, but there are similarities. Their whereabouts are unknown, but rumors suggest that they were in the Digital World when the nukes fell, so maybe they're still out there somewhere...
