Numerous viral digimon are described as being infected by a bug that turned them evil.
A Virus vs Vaccine war is a major element of my RPG setting, and I’d like to come up with some good fluff for converting a digimon from one attribute to another. Note: This is meant to be more of a plot thing than a mechanic. I don’t intend for this to be the kind of thing that happens during a battle (though maybe to defeated opponents afterwards).
Infecting a digimon to turn it into a Virus-type, and likewise ”purifying” a viral digimon, should be a difficult process, presumably arduous and draining for the subject digimon. Maybe they take heavy damage as their data is restructured, or get hit with temporary stat drop?
Perhaps powerful digimon can infect/purify through a special attack, presumably at a cost to the user (Temporary stat drop?). Of course an unwilling target gets a save to resist.
Feel free to throw more ideas at me!

You could do something like Dark Gear/Dark spiral where there are objects that corrupt and control the Digimon, it could even be an attack by an powerful virus Digimon. Similarly it can only be gotten rid of with a Digivice, but doing so reduces the stage of the Digimon by 1 as you had to clear out so much data.
Alternatively the infection may only be a start and it doesn't immediately change the target. They just have more viscous and aggressive impulses, and if they act on them it speeds up the transformation.

I considered that, but it's not quite the flavor I have in mind. It's not really meant to be something the players go around fixing like in Adventure, but rather a background issue contributing to the unrest in the digital world. Example: When the Holy Army fights demon digimon, they offer their enemies the chance to renounce their evil ways and become purified as an alternative to destruction. {Click for Top Secret GM Spoiler Stuff }The Virus vs Vaccine war is not nearly as black and white as the players may believe at first glance.
Virus digimon aren't straight-up Evil, and have been forming armies in retaliation to the Vaccines' attempt to hunt them down.
Formed from antivirus programs, the more militant Vaccine digimon see their purpose in life as protecting the stability of the Digital World from the threat Viral digimon pose. This is a legitimate concern. Even if many Virus digimon harbor no ill will, their presence corrupts the code of the Digital World, and causes electronics to malfunction in the Human World.
Viral digimon being being "purified" is certainly safer for the stability of the world(s), but many of them resent the idea of being forcibly changed into a different being, especially when there's an entire army devoted to wiping them out.
I'm not looking to make a clear right or wrong in this scenario, I'd rather leave it up to the players to decide what they'll do. This might shed some light on why I'm having so much trouble deciding how it works.
